Victoria Square
A small central London square on the Grosvenor Estate, originally developed in 1838.The landscaping of the square had been reduced to a bleak concrete paved central island, with two trees and two concrete benches, which served to guide traffic round a one way system. Our clients, Westminster City Council, the Grosvenor Estate and the residents of the square gave us the commission of humanising the space through enclosure and hard and soft landscaping. A statue of the young Queen Victoria, who ascended to the throne at the time of the building of the square, was commissioned and the new central island of the square planned around this.
The two catalpa trees were retained.
The project was developed in close liaison with English Heritage and Westminster City Council and in 2006 won the BALI Award in the Mainly Hard Landscaping section.
